Treatment Guidelines
The primary goals of immediate first aid are to protect the player
from further injury and get the player back into action as soon and
safely as possible. To this end each coach should
Take your time
Immediately
call for professional medical care whenever necessary.
Use the "RICE"
formula to reduce swelling.
Note, in writing, how the injury happened.
Use first aid
for common muscle injuries.
Inform the parents
of the player the details of the injury and the treatment you performed,
and suggest medical attention for the play whenever necessary.
Take Your Time:
Don’t allow your player to be rushed off the field or court.
Don’t be pressured into moving a player before you are convinced
that it’s safe. This is especially important for neck, head,
and spinal cord injuries.
Immediately call for professional medical care
whenever necessary:
If you suspect
or find the following:
Spinal cord injury
Head injury
Bleeding from
the ear
Compound fracture
of any bone
Heart problem
Unconsciousness,
even temporarily
Skull fracture
Any other injury
which in your judgement warrants immediate professional medical attention
